Why it started
The DSA Footprint Foundation (FPF) was established in 2016 to inspire children and youths to visualize their potential and worth, and to model examples of essential life skills for them to learn. Our hope is for them to excel at personal and professional endeavors, and to utilize our services for them to grow their knowledge and skills. The organization was registered as a nonprofit entity with Washington State’s Office of the Secretary of State under the Corporations and Charities Division.
How it started
For the first four years, DSA FPF engaged in small but high impact activities despite minimal resources. Generally, we provided school supplies and kitchen essentials, and covered the cost of Children’s Day and Teachers’ Day activities for Brighter Beginner Kindergarten in Steer Town, Jamaica (Principal, Sherene Williams). Although efforts were dampened during the COVID -19 pandemic, the DSA FPF was still able to provide resources to help Brighter Beginner Kindergarten reopen its doors to students.
In 2023, the organization embarked on its first major effort to spearhead a camp for girls in Steer Town and surrounding areas. As a result, the organization sought and was granted tax exempt status -501 C (3), EIN # 92-2692927.
Girls’ Empowerment Camp in Jamaica
In 2023, DSA FPF led its inaugural summer institute (Girls’ Empowerment Camp) in Steer Town. The three-day in-person and two-day asynchronous effort occurred from July 20th through 27th. The asynchronous time was built into the camp’s schedule for participants to complete their culminating projects.
The success of the event is attributed to the DSA FPF team, donors, and volunteers from across Jamaica and the United States.
